The Hollywood Reporter gives us some details about the cross over between The Originals and The Vampire Diaries when Nina Dobrev makes a guest appearance on the Originals in an early episode.
(and we don’t even have an entire week until the Season premiere! YAY!)
Are drop-bys in the cards for the near future? “There’s a lot of dirty family business to deal with first,” says co-exec producer Michael Narducci
New details for The Originals’ Vampire Diaries crossover have surfaced.
Nina Dobrev heads to The Originals in the Nov. 3 episode as original doppelganger, Tatia, who will be seen in Vikings-era flashbacks. A character previously mentioned during the 13th episode of The Vampire Diaries season three, “Bringing Out the Dead,” she will be interacting with Joseph Morgan’s Klaus and Daniel Gillies’ Elijah. How did the opportunity to have her on The Originals present itself? As the season was being realized, The Originals writers came up with an arc that almost required Dobrev’s presence — and it would have likely been scrapped had the Vampire Diaries star not been able to do it.
We want to have these crossovers take place from a point of story. What makes the most sense for our story? “There’s no possible way to tell the story if we didn’t get Nina Dobrev,” co-executive producer Michael Narducci told a handful of reporters at a recent screening. “We basically got on our knees and begged her.”
“She was, to her credit, wonderful,” added Narducci. “We tell a story that will make you understand [Tatia’s] fate, what happened to her, her relationship with both brothers, and why what happened between her and the two brothers is so beautiful and also tragic.”
The writers spent significant time making sure Elijah’s dinner scene in Vampire Diaries, when Tatia is first referenced (Elijah called her “an exquisite beauty”), remained intact. (Watch that scene above.) “We studied every word of that to make sure we were honoring that and I think we do,” Narducci assured.
In fielding obligatory questions about future Originals-Vampire Diaries crossovers, Narducci admitted, “That’s a little bit above my pay grade.” The likelihood of stories in Mystic Falls and New Orleans converging, specifically in reference to Klaus and Caroline’s courtship, seemed slim. “It doesn’t feel like there’s an easy way to make people drop what they’re doing in Mystic Falls and come to New Orleans, and certainly once our story lines get rolling, it’s going to be very obvious that it’ll be very impossible for our characters to take a vacation and go to Mystic Falls,” he explained. “If anything, the last thing [Klaus] would want is to involve someone else in that. There’s a lot of dirty family business to deal with first.”
As for Dobrev, Tatia represented a contrast to the other doppelgangers (see: Elena, Katherine, Amara) she’s played over the years.
“She’s the very first doppelganger so she doesn’t have the history of all the other doppelgangers behind her. She is the purest of them all, she’s the most unaffected, she’s the most regular — almost like how Elena was before all this shit happened,” the actress tells The Hollywood Reporter, laughing at the thought of what has since transpired on Vampire Diaries. “But it definitely catches up to her as any character on this show affected by all these supernatural beings [are]. It doesn’t really go well for her. It’s all about love and happiness until everything goes wrong.”
The Originals returns Oct. 6 on The CW.
The cast & crew of the Vampire Diaries & the Originals are taking time to honor one of their own! Read below as Julie Plec sits down and discusses Sarah and the walkathon with Kristin Dos Santos.
Earlier this year, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals family lost one of their own in a tragic accident.
Sarah Jones, a young camera assistant in Georgia, lost her life while working on the film set for the Gregg Allman biopic Midnight Rider due to unsafe working conditions. Today would have been her 28th birthday, and the TVD and Originals cast and crew are honoring her in an incredibly meaningful way.
Members from both CW hit shows banded together to organize a 5K walk-a-thon in Atlanta, where both shows film, on Sunday, October 5, led by Jones’ parents, Richard and Elizabeth Jones, along with her brother Eric. All proceeds from the event will go to the Sarah Jones Film Foundation.
We were so moved when we heard about this amazing event that we sat down with TVD/Originals boss Julie Plec so she could tell us all about how the walk-a-thon will honor Jones and help her family. Watch our exclusive interview with Plec below!
“She was a really beautiful girl and a really wonderful person and extremely close with the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals,” Plec said. “So the crews of both shows and some of the cast of both shows have all been invited. We’re going to have fun making it a full social media experience for everyone and get people to tweet along as they walk, other crews across the country can walk with us, we’re going to try to put together a Spotify playlist…and it’s a fundraising experience.”
Plec continued, “She will be missed, and this is our way of celebrating her.”

LET’S MAKE A DEAL — Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) try a brutal new approach to provoke Elena (Nina Dobrev) into turning her humanity back on, and Caroline (Candice Accola) is frustrated when her attempt to intervene backfires. When Elena figures out a way to call the Salvatore brothers’ bluff, they call for backup from a surprising source. Matt (Zach Roerig) gives Rebekah (Claire Holt) some unsolicited advice on her life choices, and she tries to help him in return. Caroline has a confusing and dangerous encounter with Klaus (Joseph Morgan), and Katherine (Nina Dobrev) is suspicious when Bonnie (Kat Graham) makes her an offer that she promises will benefit them both. Darnell Martin directed the episode written by Michael Narducci & Rebecca Sonnenshine (#421).
